Where to Stay in New York City
Choosing the right neighborhood can significantly enhance your New York experience. Whether you prefer the vibrant heart of Midtown or the relaxed elegance of the Upper West Side, NYC offers a diverse range of accommodations. Here are some top recommendations:
The Lucerne
Although I’m a native New Yorker, now residing in Paris, I book a hotel when I visit. On my recent trip, we stayed at The Lucerne on the Upper West Side and absolutely adored it – we would definitely return. If you’re seeking a genuinely laid-back, quintessential NYC neighborhood experience, both the Upper West Side and Upper East Side are excellent choices. The Lucerne is a fantastic boutique hotel housed in a historic building, perfectly situated amidst fabulous restaurants and shops, and just steps away from the iconic Central Park.

Hotel Belleclaire
For a more budget-friendly option in the same desirable Upper West Side neighborhood as The Lucerne, consider the Hotel Belleclaire. This hotel provides simple, clean, and comfortable rooms, boasting an unbeatable location merely steps from the tranquility of Central Park. It’s a great choice for travelers seeking value without compromising on prime location.

The Warwick New York
If you prefer to stay in the heart of the action, close to many of the sites featured in this 4-day NYC itinerary, The Warwick New York is an excellent choice. This historic Midtown hotel, known for its elegant marble bathrooms and antique furnishings, often offers reasonable rates, depending on your travel dates. Its central location makes it ideal for easily accessing numerous attractions.

Day 1: Midtown Manhattan Icons
Your first day in New York City kicks off in Midtown, a bustling district packed with some of the city’s most recognizable landmarks. Get ready for an exhilarating introduction to the Big Apple!
Empire State Building
Visiting the Empire State Building is truly one of the most magical and quintessential New York City experiences! This itinerary suggests visiting first thing in the morning to maximize your day, but a nighttime visit offers an equally breathtaking, sparkling panorama. With more time, you might even consider two visits to admire both the daytime and nighttime views from this iconic skyscraper.

Saks Fifth Avenue
Saks Fifth Avenue is a true New York City institution and a breathtaking department store located in the heart of Midtown Manhattan. Having spent much of my childhood here while my mom worked at Saks, I might be biased, but I truly believe it’s one of the most magical shopping destinations. Step inside to explore the latest fashion trends, find a special clothing piece or accessory, or even pick up a unique NYC souvenir – like their beautiful, yearly keepsake snow globes if you’re visiting around Christmas!
St. Patrick’s Cathedral
Just a short walk away, you’ll find the iconic and incredibly impressive St. Patrick’s Cathedral. As the largest Gothic Revival Catholic cathedral in North America, it’s a must-visit, regardless of your religious beliefs. Its stunning architecture and serene interior offer a peaceful respite from the city’s hustle. Admission is always free, though you can opt for a self-guided audio tour to learn more about its rich history.
Rockefeller Center
Directly across from St. Patrick’s Cathedral, explore the legendary Rockefeller Center. Beyond its beautiful seasonal skating rink (which becomes a vibrant plaza in warmer months), this complex boasts stunning Art Deco architecture, a variety of high-end boutiques, and numerous dining options. Take a moment to admire the Prometheus statue and soak in the bustling atmosphere.
Mid-morning Cookie from Chip City
After a morning of extensive exploring, you’ll undoubtedly be ready for a delicious treat. Do yourself a favor and make a quick stop at Chip City for one of their truly incredible cookies! Their cookies are absolutely out of this world, with a perfect balance of crisp edges and gooey centers. We’ve sampled several flavors, and our top recommendations include the classic chocolate chip, the delightful maple syrup (grab it if available!), the rich peanut butter and dark chocolate, and the decadent brownie cookie. You can even grab a glass of milk to complement your cookie for the ultimate nostalgic snack!
Top of the Rock
Experience one of the most breathtaking observation decks in New York City: Top of the Rock! Offering unparalleled 360-degree views, including iconic sights like the Empire State Building and a sprawling Central Park, it’s a view that can’t be missed. You can choose a standard ticket to simply visit the observation deck or elevate your experience by adding a ticket to the “Beam Experience,” which allows you to recreate the famous photo of construction workers perched high above NYC during Rockefeller Center’s construction. You can always purchase a simple ticket and upgrade on-site if you decide to brave the Beam!

Lunch at Gallagher’s Steakhouse
For a truly quintessential New York dining experience, carve out time for lunch at a traditional steakhouse. Our favorite is Gallagher’s Steakhouse, an iconic establishment with a rich history dating back to 1927. While their dinner is superb, their lunch offer provides an incredibly affordable way to savor the full steakhouse experience. At the time of writing, their lunch menu offers a starter, main course, and dessert for just $32 per person. We recently enjoyed a wonderful meal there; Hugo loved his salad, filet mignon, and key lime pie, while I savored a delicious Caesar salad, filet mignon, and classic New York cheesecake.
MoMA (Museum of Modern Art)
MoMA stands as one of the most incredible museums New York City has to offer. You could easily spend hours, even a full day, exploring its vast collections and still not see everything. To make the most of your visit, prioritize seeing the MoMA highlights, including masterpieces like Van Gogh’s Starry Night, Dali’s The Persistence of Memory, Giorgio de Chirico’s The Song of Love, Jackson Pollock’s One: Number 31, Picasso’s Les Demoiselles d’Avignon, Andy Warhol’s Campbell’s Soup Cans, Monet’s serene Water Lilies, Marcel Duchamp’s revolutionary Bicycle Wheel, Lichtenstein’s dramatic Drowning Girl, Magritte’s enigmatic The Lovers, Edward Hopper’s atmospheric Gas Station, and Frida Kahlo’s powerful Self-Portrait with Cropped Hair. Each piece offers a unique insight into the world of modern art.

Greenacre Park
Escape the urban bustle at Greenacre Park, one of my absolute favorite secret gardens in NYC. My mom used to take me here for lunch when I was a little girl, and it has charmingly remained almost unchanged. This peaceful haven in the middle of Midtown features a stunning 25-foot waterfall and a cozy mini coffee shop. Most New Yorkers don’t even know about this tranquil oasis, making it a truly special, hidden gem that offers a moment of serenity amidst the city’s ceaseless energy.
Pop into Bloomingdale’s
If you’re in the mood for some classic New York shopping, make sure to pop into Bloomingdale’s on 59th Street. This iconic department store is a treasure trove, featuring a wide array of designers and a plethora of unique items, from fashion to home goods. It’s the perfect place to explore, find a special piece, or simply soak in the upscale shopping atmosphere.
Frrrozen Hot Chocolate at Serendipity
Another beloved spot from my childhood, Serendipity 3, is a must-visit for a delightful sugar break! Indulge in their famous Frrrozen Hot Chocolate, a truly extravagant frozen chocolate drink. You can stick with the classic chocolate version or venture into something a little wilder, like the s’mores variation. It’s a whimsical experience that perfectly captures a nostalgic New York charm.

Walk Up Madison Avenue
No trip to New York City is truly complete without a leisurely stroll along Madison Avenue, renowned as one of the most elegant shopping streets in the world. As you head uptown, take your time to admire the exquisite window displays and browse the luxurious boutiques. Consider popping into flagship stores like Ralph Lauren or Hermès to find a special, high-end souvenir from your unforgettable NYC adventure.
Drink at Bemelman’s Bar inside the Carlyle Hotel
Your evening continues with a sophisticated stop at the legendary Bemelmans Bar, nestled within The Carlyle Hotel. Step into a world of timeless elegance as you take in the iconic hand-painted murals by Ludwig Bemelmans, the celebrated artist and creator of the beloved Madeline children’s books. Choose from an extensive cocktail list and immerse yourself in the ambiance, often enhanced by live jazz music – a truly classic New York experience.
Dinner on the Upper East Side
Conclude your first day with a delightful dinner on the Upper East Side. For a taste of chic French cuisine, consider Quatorze, offering an authentic bistro experience. Alternatively, head to The Penrose, a popular local spot known for its delicious American classics, creative cocktails, and often lively jazz music, providing a perfect end to your Midtown exploration.
Day 2: Upper West Side & Upper East Side – Culture and Nature
Day two takes you to the refined, culture-rich neighborhoods of the Upper West Side and Upper East Side, blending world-class museums with the natural beauty of Central Park.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art (The Met)
Begin your day at the magnificent Metropolitan Museum of Art on the Upper East Side, a truly magical institution. If your time is limited, prioritize a visit to the Egyptian Wing to marvel at the awe-inspiring Temple of Dendur. You might also consider following the Met Museum’s own self-paced One Hour Highlights of the Met tour. For those with more time, after the Egyptian Wing, explore the American Wing, where you can admire exquisite Tiffany stained glass and a meticulously re-created classic American home, filled with fascinating treasures and antique furniture. It’s an incredibly beautiful and immersive experience. If you prefer a structured visit, join the Best of the Met Guided Tour to ensure you see the museum’s most celebrated masterpieces.

Central Park
Even with just four days in New York, dedicating time to explore Central Park is absolutely essential. This urban oasis, spanning 843 acres, has graced countless films, books, and songs, and truly lives up to its legendary status. It’s a magical escape from the city’s concrete jungle, offering endless opportunities for leisurely strolls, enjoying lush landscapes, and discovering hidden gems. Don’t rush; simply wander and soak in the serene beauty of this iconic park.

Lunch at The Loeb Boathouse
Few places in New York City exude as much beauty and romance as The Loeb Boathouse in Central Park. Whether you’re traveling as a couple, with friends, or with family, this iconic lakeside restaurant offers something delightful for everyone. It’s the perfect spot to pause for lunch on your second day, enjoying picturesque views and a charming atmosphere. Classic menu favorites include fresh oysters, delectable crab cakes, and the quintessential New York cheesecake.
American Museum of Natural History
After a relaxing lunch, take a short walk to the American Museum of Natural History. This classic New York City institution is a must-see destination during your four days in the city! Even if your time is limited, be sure to catch the highlights: the colossal 94-foot model of a blue whale suspended from the ceiling, the impressive giant Sequoia tree, the lifelike African elephants, the ancient Galapagos Giant Tortoise, and the museum’s famous dinosaur mummy. It’s an educational and awe-inspiring experience for all ages.

Cupcake at Magnolia Bakery
After your museum visit, if you’re craving something sweet, treat yourself to a cupcake at Magnolia Bakery. Ever since I moved to Paris, a Magnolia cupcake has become a cherished tradition. My trip home to NYC always begins and ends with a classic vanilla cupcake topped with chocolate frosting. I love these cupcakes so much that my sister once hand-carried one in her handbag from New York to Milan for me! Magnolia’s cupcakes boast the perfect consistency – not overly sweet, perfectly sized, and simply divine. Even amidst the incredible pastries of Paris, I truly miss these delightful treats.

Walk Around the Upper West Side
I absolutely adore the Upper West Side! It’s a chic, yet wonderfully down-to-earth neighborhood, characterized by its stunning brownstone architecture, charming independent stores, inviting cafes, and a rich cultural scene. Allocate some time in your NYC itinerary to simply wander and soak in its unique ambiance. Take photos, find a bench to read, or simply relax and observe the vibrant local life – it’s a truly authentic New York experience.
Pre-dinner Drinks on the Upper West Side
If you’re in the mood to unwind before dinner, the Upper West Side offers an array of delightful spots for a pre-dinner drink. On our last trip with local friends, we discovered some fantastic places. Experience the vibrant Hawaiian tiki bar, Tiki Chick, famous for the best piña coladas we’ve ever tasted! For a sophisticated wine selection and chic interiors, visit Vin Sur Vingt Wine Bar. If local craft beers are more your style, The Hopimist offers a great selection. Each spot provides a unique atmosphere to enjoy a cocktail or brew.
Dinner at Han Dynasty or for New York Pizza
Don’t leave New York without experiencing authentic New York-Chinese cuisine! On your second night, enjoy dinner at the local Upper West Side Chinese restaurant, Han Dynasty. They are renowned for their incredible Dan Dan noodles, and also serve up fantastic sesame noodles and scallion pancakes – it’s New York-Chinese food at its finest. Alternatively, for a quintessential NYC experience, grab an authentic slice of New York City pizza. We highly recommend the delicious pizza we enjoyed at Made in New York Pizza!

Day 3: Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, The Financial District & Brooklyn
Day three is dedicated to exploring pivotal historical landmarks and experiencing the vibrant energy of downtown Manhattan and a glimpse into Brooklyn.
Statue of Liberty
Your third day begins with a visit to two of America’s most profound symbols: the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. No trip to New York would be complete without paying homage to the iconic Statue of Liberty, a beacon of freedom and democracy. A crucial word of caution: many websites purport to sell tickets, but there is only ONE official vendor authorized to sell tickets for the ferry to Liberty Island and Ellis Island, and for access to the Statue of Liberty itself: Statue City Cruises. Purchase your tickets directly from their official website to avoid scams and ensure a smooth, authentic experience. Other vendors may offer boat tours that sail around the islands but will not allow you to disembark and visit the statue or museums. Be vigilant when booking tickets for this essential New York experience!

Ellis Island
Following your visit to the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island offers an incredibly fascinating and deeply moving experience. The Ellis Island Museum allows you to delve into the powerful history of immigration to America, from the mid-19th to the mid-20th century. You’ll gain insight into the diverse reasons people left their home countries, the arduous journeys they endured on large ships, and their experiences upon arrival at “the Golden Door” on Ellis Island. I was particularly captivated by seeing the Great Hall where millions of immigrants first arrived, learning about the health inspections (and sometimes treatments for diseases) they underwent, and examining old documents and certificates that chronicle their journeys. It truly puts into perspective the immense courage of those who, often alone and with limited resources, sought new opportunities in America.
Lunch at Fraunces Tavern
Fraunces Tavern is a delightful hidden gem in NYC! We serendipitously stumbled upon this restaurant during our last trip, and I’m so glad we did. After spending the morning exploring the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island with Hugo’s family (on their first NYC visit!), we were famished and didn’t want to travel all the way back to the Upper West Side for our planned lunch. A quick search led us to Fraunces Tavern – what a discovery! Dating back to 1762, it’s officially a historic landmark and the oldest bar in NYC. George Washington himself gathered his officers here to bid them farewell at the end of the Revolutionary War. Beyond its incredible history, the tavern boasts a beautiful, evocative interior and an enticing menu of elevated American classics, including a delicious bison burger, portobello and mozzarella sandwich, and fresh salads. Pro tip: you absolutely must order the parmesan truffle fries – you won’t regret it! And if you’re in the mood for a midday treat, their spicy margarita is fabulous!

South Street Seaport
After a delicious and restorative lunch, make your way to the historic South Street Seaport. Enjoy a leisurely stroll around this revitalized waterfront area, taking in the stunning views of both the iconic Brooklyn Bridge and the majestic Manhattan Bridge. This vibrant district offers a mix of historical ships, trendy shops, and excellent dining options. Consider stopping for a refreshing drink at Industry Kitchen, where you can relax and savor panoramic views of the East River and its impressive bridges.
Brooklyn Bridge and DUMBO
Now, it’s time for one of New York City’s most iconic experiences: walking across the Brooklyn Bridge! As you traverse this engineering marvel, you’ll be treated to unparalleled views of the Manhattan skyline and the East River. Once you reach the Brooklyn side, you’ll find yourself in DUMBO (Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass), a trendy neighborhood famous for its cobblestone streets and converted warehouse buildings. Don’t miss the chance to capture that quintessential Instagram-famous shot on Washington Street, between Front and Water streets, framing the Manhattan Bridge perfectly. Spend some time wandering through DUMBO, exploring its art galleries, boutiques, and waterfront parks. If time allows, venture deeper into Brooklyn; this one-day DUMBO Brooklyn itinerary offers further ideas. For a unique, off-the-beaten-path Brooklyn experience, head to the Kings County Distillery for a fascinating whiskey tour or simply enjoy a craft cocktail. You can even purchase a bottle of locally made Brooklyn whiskey as a distinctive souvenir or gift.
Dinner: Brooklyn or Broadway District
If you choose to extend your time in Brooklyn for dinner, a visit to Juliana’s Pizza is highly recommended for some of the borough’s best pies. However, if you’re planning to catch a Broadway show in the evening (which we enthusiastically recommend for an unforgettable NYC experience!), head back to Manhattan. You can either enjoy an early dinner before the performance or savor a late-night meal in the vibrant Theater District afterward. Some of my favorite restaurants in the Theater District include Sardi’s, a New York City institution since 1921 renowned for its caricatures of Broadway stars, and Carmine’s, offering lively, family-style Italian-American dishes in a fun and boisterous atmosphere.
Broadway Show
If you have a passion for musical theater, ensure you book tickets for a Broadway show during your New York trip. Broadway shows are a deeply cherished part of my childhood memories, and the magic of live theater never fades, no matter how many times you experience it. Whether you opt for a timeless classic or an exciting new production, attending a Broadway show promises to be an exhilarating and truly memorable experience that captures the heart and soul of New York City.

This innovative green space offers stunning city views, beautiful plantings, and public art installations. As you walk, be sure to take a moment to admire the striking architecture of the Zaha Hadid building, located right next to the High Line at 520 West 28th Street, a testament to modern design blending seamlessly with urban revitalization.

Lunch at the Empire Diner
The Empire Diner is a legendary New York City landmark, instantly recognizable from countless films, including Woody Allen’s classic 1979 movie, Manhattan. This iconic Art Deco diner offers a menu that perfectly blends classic diner fare, such as hearty egg sandwiches, quintessential New York pastrami sandwiches, and juicy burgers, with modern updates like freshly squeezed juices, homemade granola, and creative cocktails. It’s a fantastic spot for a nostalgic and delicious lunch experience.

Washington Square Park
After lunch, take a vibrant stroll through Washington Square Park. This lively Greenwich Village landmark is known for its iconic Washington Arch, diverse street performers, and a buzzing atmosphere that truly embodies New York’s artistic spirit. Enjoy the energy before heading further downtown to explore the unique neighborhoods below Houston Street.
SoHo, Little Italy and Chinatown
Next, immerse yourself in the fashionable district of SoHo (South of Houston Street). Wander its charming cobblestone streets, admire the distinctive cast-iron architecture for which SoHo is famous, and browse its numerous high-end boutiques and art galleries. Be sure to stop by Dominique Ansel Bakery (189 Spring Street) for a taste of their world-renowned cronut! If you have extra time and energy, continue your cultural exploration by walking through the historic enclaves of Little Italy and Chinatown, where you can savor authentic cuisine and soak in the vibrant cultural traditions.
