Its vastness and diverse exhibits mean you could easily spend a full day, whether you’re visiting solo, as a couple seeking a romantic escape, or with a family eager for adventure. All the Beautiful Fish at Nausicaá Aquarium

Among the most mesmerizing sights at Nausicaá are the countless fish, shimmering in every hue imaginable. We found ourselves standing hand-in-hand, completely absorbed in watching the schools of beautifully colored fish glide gracefully through their expansive habitats. The serene atmosphere, combined with the gentle movements of the fish, created a truly relaxing and almost meditative experience. From tiny, iridescent darting fish to larger, majestically swimming species, each tank is a vibrant underwater tableau.

The Brown Jellyfish

The jellyfish exhibits at Nausicaá are truly a highlight, showcasing an astonishing variety of these ethereal creatures. I’ve harbored a deep affection for penguins since my childhood, often spending full days at the Central Park Zoo with my mother, marveling at their antics. The experience at Nausicaá, however, was uniquely special because I had never before been able to observe these charming birds so intimately. Visitors can sit comfortably beside the enclosure for as long as they wish, with only a thin sheet of glass separating them from the lively penguins. I could have easily spent an entire day just in this section of the aquarium, watching their playful swimming and waddling. These delightful residents are native to South Africa, making their presence in France an even more fascinating display of global biodiversity and conservation efforts.

While we brought our own tripod to ensure we could take photos together, we were delighted to discover that Nausicaá also provides professional photographers stationed throughout the aquarium. These friendly staff members will approach you and offer to take beautiful keepsake photos, allowing you to fully immerse yourselves in the experience without worrying about camera settings. These high-quality photographs are then available for purchase at the end of your Nausicaá journey, offering a wonderful tangible memory of your extraordinary day.

The constant motion of fish and water, coupled with the typically low and variable lighting conditions, can make it difficult to achieve clear, bright, and blur-free images. However, with a few strategic adjustments, you can still come away with beautiful photographs of the mesmerizing marine life.

These tips will help you take lovely photos of the fish and animals from your visit.

• Flash Off: This is paramount. Always remember to turn off your camera’s flash. Not only does it create harsh glare on the glass, but more importantly, it is extremely disruptive and potentially harmful to the sensitive eyes of the animals in the aquarium.
• Lens Against Glass: Once your flash is off, press your camera lens directly against the aquarium glass. This simple technique significantly reduces reflections and glare from the exhibit lighting and the ambient environment, dramatically improving clarity and limiting blurriness in your photos.
• Manual Camera Settings: If you’re using a camera with manual settings, adjust them to compensate for the low light:
  • Increase ISO: Raising the ISO sensitivity allows your camera’s sensor to capture more light, making your images brighter.
  • Wider Aperture (Lower F-stop): Open your aperture as wide as possible (e.g., f/2.8, f/1.8). A lower f-stop lets in more light and creates a shallow depth of field, helping the subject stand out.

While several simple cafes are dotted throughout the aquarium, perfect for a quick coffee and pastry or a light bite, we were fortunate to sample the offerings at Le Calypso Café.

At Le Calypso Café, we indulged in a delightful lunch, made even more enjoyable by the gorgeous seaside view. It truly was a lovely way to spend a Thursday afternoon, savoring delicious food while overlooking the sparkling Opal Coast. The menu features a selection of fresh and simple fish dishes, including classic French favorites like moules-frites (mussels and fries) and the ever-popular fish and chips. For those who prefer other options, meat dishes are also available. To complement our meal, we enjoyed a refreshing glass of local wine for me, and a crisp beer for Hugo, alongside a variety of other beverage choices.

To conclude our meal on a sweet note, we enjoyed some delicious homemade desserts. We sampled a tasty tarte au sucre (sugar tart), a beloved specialty from the North of France, a region renowned for its sugar production. We also delighted in a rich slice of chocolate fondant. Each dessert was charmingly topped with a precious, sea-life inspired cookie, adding a whimsical touch to the culinary experience.

To enrich your visit even further, make sure to consult the daily schedule for activities and feeding times at Nausicaá. Witnessing the sea lions being fed is a particularly dynamic and popular spectacle, offering a glimpse into their playful nature and intelligence. We thoroughly enjoy short road trips, and Nausicaá is conveniently situated approximately 2.5 hours by car from bustling metropolises like Paris, London, and Brussels. The drive itself is often scenic, making the journey part of the adventure.

For those preferring public transport, Nausicaá is also easily reachable by train, with good connections to Boulogne-sur-Mer. Additionally, its coastal location means it’s even accessible by boat for some adventurous travelers. To truly immerse yourself in the charm of Boulogne-sur-Mer and fully experience not only Nausicaá but also the many other attractions this beautiful region has to offer, we highly recommend planning a stay of at least three days, or even longer if your schedule permits.
