The Best Coffee Shops in Paris: A Connoisseur’s Guide
Is there anything more romantic or quintessentially Parisian than finding a cozy coffee shop in Paris, sipping a perfectly crafted espresso, and watching the world go by on the beautiful Parisian streets? For me, immersing myself in the ambiance of Parisian cafes is one of my absolute favorite activities. If you’re wondering where to find me, chances are I’m nestled in a charming coffee shop, and it’s highly probable that many of the articles you read on this blog were penned from such a spot. In fact, I kick off each and every morning with a visit to one of the exceptional cafes featured on this curated list.
I’ve always been captivated by the enduring love affair between Paris and so many legendary painters, writers, and artists throughout history. It’s truly inspiring to imagine literary giants like Hemingway at Café de Flore, sharing conversations with F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald, or Gertrude Stein settling in for an espresso and a croissant. One can almost picture Picasso wandering the cobblestone streets, stopping into a local Paris cafe for a steaming cup of coffee and a simple yet delicious tartine (a baguette with salted butter).
The Parisian coffee scene has undergone a remarkable transformation in recent years. When I first moved to Paris in 2002, the coffee options were quite limited, typically an espresso court/serré (a very concentrated espresso) or an espresso allongé (a slightly longer, diluted espresso). Today, however, a new wave of specialty coffee has swept through the city, offering a diverse array of choices. You can now easily find and enjoy your favorite cappuccino, latte, filtered coffee, Americano, cortado, or even a mocha fix without any trouble. Paris has truly embraced the third-wave coffee movement, marrying its classic charm with modern brewing techniques.
We’ve meticulously researched and personally visited all the cafes in Paris featured on this list, ensuring each offers a unique and high-quality experience. To make your exploration easier, I’ve organized them by arrondissement, so you can effortlessly discover a fantastic cup of coffee no matter which part of the city you’re exploring. I am committed to keeping this guide updated, ensuring you can confidently choose the cafes you wish to visit without encountering unwelcome surprises like closed establishments. Be sure to pin this post for future reference!
A little laptop icon (💻) beneath a cafe’s title indicates that it’s work-friendly, meaning it offers free Wi-Fi, comfortable seating for working, and a welcoming atmosphere that encourages you to stay a while. Do note that this cafe is very small; unlike other Parisian cafes on this list, it’s not a place to settle in for hours with your laptop. It’s more of a delightful pop-in, grab-a-quick-coffee, or take-it-to-go kind of spot. We particularly love browsing their collection of vintage Vogue magazines while waiting for our order.
