Creating Lasting Memories: Meaningful Christmas Traditions for Couples
Christmas is a time for joy, connection, and creating lasting memories. For Hugo and me, it’s a season filled with cherished traditions, some dating back to our first Christmas together, and others that we’ve lovingly added over the years. Whether we’re spending Christmas in Paris, embarking on a festive adventure, or simply enjoying the cozy atmosphere at home, we always prioritize our Christmas traditions. These shared rituals enhance our bond and bring us closer during this special time of year.

Christmas Traditions for Couples
These are our treasured Christmas traditions that we eagerly anticipate each year. They bring so much joy, connection, and festive spirit to our holiday season. We hope you find inspiration in them and create your own meaningful rituals.
Write a Christmas Letter to Each Other
The tradition of writing Christmas letters to each other adds a personal and heartfelt touch to the season. Each year, we make a point of shopping for beautiful Christmas cards together. In Paris, one of our favorite places to find exquisite cards is Brentano’s, a renowned English bookshop in Paris. The act of selecting the perfect card together sets the stage for the meaningful words we’ll share.
Since we often travel during the Christmas season, we sometimes opt to purchase our Christmas cards from a local shop in the destination we’re visiting. This allows us to incorporate a unique element of our travel experience into our tradition.
Inside the card, we pour our hearts out, reflecting on the beautiful experiences we’ve shared throughout the year. We express our pride in each other’s accomplishments, outline our dreams and aspirations for the coming year, and shower each other with affirmations of love and appreciation. It’s a powerful way to connect on a deeper level and reaffirm our commitment to each other.
Explore Festive Christmas Decorations Together
One of our favorite Christmas pastimes is immersing ourselves in the enchanting world of Christmas decorations. Every year, we eagerly revisit our beloved spots in Paris to admire the dazzling displays. The city transforms into a winter wonderland, and there’s an abundance of stunning sights to behold!
Avenue Montaigne is a must-see, with its trees adorned with twinkling lights and the captivating Dior storefront and windows. The festive ambiance is truly magical.
We also make sure to stroll along the Champs-Elysées, taking in the radiant lights, the Chanel and Dior storefronts, and the charming bows crafted from lights on rue Faubourg Saint Honoré. The sheer elegance of these displays is breathtaking.
Of course, a visit to Place Vendôme and the Printemps windows is always on our itinerary. These iconic landmarks are renowned for their spectacular Christmas decorations, and they never fail to impress.

Celebrate the 12 Days of Christmas Together
Celebrating the 12 days of Christmas holds a special place in my heart, as it was a cherished tradition in my family growing up. It evokes fond memories of childhood and continues to be a meaningful part of our Christmas celebrations.
My mom would thoughtfully select 12 small gifts for each of us – myself, my sister, and my brother – and we would open one present each night. Unlike the traditional 12 days of Christmas, which begin on Christmas Day and extend until January 5th, our family’s tradition started 12 days before Christmas and culminated on Christmas Day.
When Hugo and I began our life together, I eagerly introduced him to this beloved family tradition. For the first few years, we celebrated the 12 days of Christmas in the same way my family always had, leading up to Christmas Day.
However, in recent years, we’ve opted to align our celebration with the traditional 12 days of Christmas dates, starting on Christmas Day and concluding on January 5th. Coincidentally, January 5th is also our dating anniversary, making it an even more special and meaningful way to end the Christmas season.
Some 12 Days of Christmas Ideas?
Shopping for presents for the 12 days of Christmas is an absolute joy! It’s an opportunity to express your love and thoughtfulness through small, meaningful gifts.
Some of our favorite 12 days of Christmas gift ideas include tea, coffee, chocolates, spices, lip balm, hand cream, massage oil, and souvenirs from our travels. These little tokens of affection add a touch of warmth and delight to each day of the celebration.

Alternatively, you could opt for acts of service. Write out 12 loving gestures you’ll perform for your partner, such as a massage, a romantic walk, or a relaxing foot rub. This adds a personal and caring touch to the tradition.
Another idea I adore is planning 12 dates for your loved one. You could choose an overarching theme that ties all 12 dates together, such as 12 coffee dates, 12 visits to wine bars, or 12 trips to bakeries. Alternatively, you could select 12 unique experiences, one for each day of Christmas. You can either enjoy the experience on the day itself or schedule it for the future, perhaps one per month over the next 12 months.
If you’re in Paris, activity ideas could include visiting Sainte Chapelle, taking a boat ride on the Seine, or exploring the Rodin museum. These experiences offer a blend of culture, romance, and unforgettable memories.

Visit a Charming Christmas Market
Christmas markets are undoubtedly one of our favorite destinations during the Christmas season! They offer a magical blend of festive cheer, handcrafted goods, and delicious treats.
Our go-to Christmas market in Paris is the Notre Dame Christmas market. It exudes charm, tradition, and authenticity, making it the most delightful Christmas market in the city.
In the past, we’ve ventured to Christmas markets in various other locations throughout France and Europe, including Alsace, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, and Luxembourg. Each market has its unique character and adds to the overall Christmas spirit.

Plan a Special Christmas Trip for Two
We always embark on a Christmas trip with Hugo’s family. Each year, we choose a different destination and divide our time between exploring on our own and spending quality time with our family. We typically arrive a few days before the rest of our family and/or stay a few days longer to ensure we have some dedicated time together, just the two of us, in addition to the family time.
Following our family Christmas trip, we often head to a different location to celebrate New Year’s Eve together and then travel to Italy to visit my family. This allows us to experience a variety of festive settings and create cherished memories with both sides of our family.
Last year, we spent Christmas in Amsterdam, and it was absolutely magical! We were captivated by the charm of Amsterdam in winter and thoroughly enjoyed the festive atmosphere.

Embark on a Christmas Market Adventure
We have a slight obsession with Christmas markets! The festive atmosphere, the handcrafted treasures, and the delicious aromas are simply irresistible.
Each year, we make it a point to visit Christmas markets in a new location or revisit a beloved favorite to immerse ourselves in the holiday cheer.
A few years ago, we embarked on a Christmas market extravaganza, driving across France and Germany in search of the best Christmas markets Europe has to offer. We visited a remarkable 47 Christmas markets on that trip and savored every moment.
Create a list of all the Christmas markets you’d love to visit together and then set out to explore a few each year. This tradition will provide you with countless opportunities to experience the magic of Christmas in different parts of the world.
Don’t forget to send yourselves a postcard from each place you visit. It’s one of our favorite couples’ traditions throughout the year, and it’s especially meaningful during the Christmas season.

Decorate Your Christmas Tree Together
Decorating a Christmas tree as a couple is a timeless tradition that holds special significance. It’s a shared experience that brings joy, laughter, and a sense of togetherness.
As the years pass, this tradition becomes even more meaningful as you accumulate a wealth of shared memories associated with decorating your tree. Each ornament represents a moment in time, a cherished experience, or a special memory.
Consider adding a new element to this tradition by each selecting a special ornament to gift each other on the day or night you decorate the tree. This will help you build a collection of Christmas ornaments filled with sentimental value over time.

Enjoy a Signature Christmas Drink
Each year, as we embark on the joyful task of decorating our Christmas tree, we indulge in a homemade French hot chocolate. It’s a tradition that adds a touch of warmth and indulgence to the experience.
Hugo’s hot chocolate is simply the best! He prepares it with real, dark chocolate and homemade whipped cream. It’s an absolutely divine treat that we eagerly anticipate each year.
Your signature Christmas drink could be hot chocolate as well, or any other beverage you both enjoy – cranberry juice, wine, Champagne, Prosecco, a Christmas cocktail, or any other drink that sparks joy and evokes the spirit of the season!
