The Allure of Cap Gris Nez and the Côte d’Opale
Our journey to La Sirene began with a scenic drive along the stunning Côte d’Opale, departing from Boulogne-sur-Mer and making delightful stops at coastal gems like La Pointe aux Oies, Audresselles, and Ambleteuse. Each location offered its own unique charm, from expansive beaches to quaint fishing villages, building anticipation for our ultimate destination: Cap Gris Nez.
Cap Gris Nez itself is a geographical marvel, a striking headland known for being one of the closest points to England, with clear views across the English Channel on a good day. Its name, “Grey Nose,” perfectly describes its dramatic grey cliffs that stand in stark contrast to the white cliffs of Dover visible across the water. This rugged landscape, shaped by wind and sea, provides an awe-inspiring backdrop to any visit, and it’s here, amidst such natural grandeur, that La Sirene stands as a beacon of culinary excellence.
Securing Your Spot: Reservations are Essential
We arrived at La Sirene Cap Gris Nez just before our 12:30 PM lunch reservation, and the scene at the entrance immediately underscored the restaurant’s popularity. A clear sign on the door indicated that every table was reserved, and we witnessed several hopeful diners approach only to be met with disappointment. Their faces, crestfallen as they turned away, served as a potent reminder: if you plan to savor the exquisite offerings at La Sirene during your visit to Cap Gris Nez, securing a reservation well in advance is not just recommended, it’s an absolute must! This ensures you won’t miss out on what promises to be an unforgettable dining experience.
Starting the Culinary Journey: Aperitifs with a View
To commence our meal, we indulged in the classic French tradition of an apéro. For me, a crisp glass of Champagne was the perfect start, its effervescence harmonizing beautifully with the vast ocean vista before us. There’s an undeniable magic in sipping fine Champagne while gazing out at the endless horizon, feeling the gentle sea breeze – a truly spectacular and highly recommended experience for anyone visiting La Sirene. Hugo, ever the responsible driver, opted for a refreshing Perrier Citron, proving that even without alcohol, the ambiance and the company made for a delightful beginning.

Hugo was visibly content, enjoying his sparkling Perrier with a wedge of lemon. His happiness wasn’t diminished by his choice to abstain from alcohol while driving; rather, it highlighted the sheer joy of being in such a beautiful setting, anticipating a meal of fresh, local seafood.

Delectable Appetizers: A Taste of the Sea
Hugo’s Fresh Seafood Platter
For those familiar with our adventures, it’s no secret that Hugo has a deep-seated affection for the sea. Having grown up on the French coast, merely an hour and a half from Cap Gris Nez, he possesses an intrinsic love for everything maritime, especially fresh seafood. So, it came as no surprise when he eagerly chose a vibrant seafood platter as his appetizer.
This magnificent plate was a testament to the local bounty, featuring a delightful array of *crevettes grises* (small, sweet grey shrimp), a succulent clam, a pristine oyster, plump *bulots* (whelks), and generous pink shrimp. Each element tasted as if it had just been plucked from the nearby waters, offering a pure, unadulterated flavor of the ocean. The freshness was unparalleled, and the variety provided a wonderful textural and taste journey, truly setting the tone for the exquisite meal to follow.

My Delightful Crab Cake Discovery
My eyes lit up when I spotted crab cakes on the menu! It’s a dish I adore but hadn’t encountered since my high school days in NYC. Finding them on a menu in Paris or during our recent travels has been a rare occurrence, making this discovery at La Sirene even more exciting.
This particular crab cake offered a delightful twist on what I was accustomed to from the North East of the US. While my previous experiences typically featured pan-fried or baked versions, this one was expertly deep-fried, resulting in a wonderfully crisp exterior that gave way to a moist, flavorful interior. It was served with a delicate lemon cream and a sprinkle of fresh spring onion, enhancing its rich crab flavor with bright, zesty notes. Trying this different style was a true pleasure, and I absolutely loved every bite. Just recalling its taste makes my mouth water even now!

Exquisite Main Courses: Celebrating Local Fish
The Perfectly Prepared Red Mullet
For his main course, Hugo selected the red mullet, a delicate and flavorful fish, expertly prepared and served on a bed of fresh, seasonal vegetables. The dish was elegantly finished with a light cream sauce, which complemented the inherent richness of the fish without overpowering its subtle taste. Every element on the plate worked in harmony, resulting in a dish that was not just delicious but truly perfect in its execution. It was a testament to La Sirene’s commitment to showcasing the natural flavors of high-quality ingredients.

Classic Sole Meunière
My choice for the main course was the classic sole meunière, a dish I had been eagerly anticipating since our arrival in Nord Pas de Calais. Sole is a fish that thrives in the waters off the North Coast of France, a fact we observed firsthand during a fascinating visit to a morning fish market with our guide, Antoine. Its prominence and freshness in the region made it an irresistible choice.
At La Sirene Cap Gris Nez, the sole meunière was executed flawlessly. The delicate sole was pan-fried to perfection in butter, creating a golden-brown crust while retaining its tender, flaky texture. Served simply with lemon slices and a hint of parsley, the dish highlighted the natural sweetness of the fish, a true testament to its quality and the chef’s skill. It was exactly what I had hoped for – a sublime taste of the local marine bounty, perfectly prepared.

A Sweet Conclusion: Time for Dessert!
As our main courses concluded, it was time for the grand finale: dessert! La Sirene Cap Gris Nez proved to be as adept at crafting sweet masterpieces as it was with savory dishes, offering an array of irresistible options.
Indulgent Chocolate Creation
I was absolutely captivated by the sheer artistry of the chocolate dessert. It was a stunning creation, featuring rich, creamy chocolate that melted in the mouth, beautifully contrasted by two distinct layers of satisfying crunch. The entire confection was elegantly crowned with a medley of ripe, vibrant berries and a sprig of fresh mint, adding bursts of color and refreshing aroma. Each spoonful was a delightful dance of textures and flavors, from the deep cocoa notes to the tangy sweetness of the fruit. This dessert was not just beautiful to look at but an indulgent treat for the palate.

Refreshing Lemon Tart
We also decided to share another delightful creation: the fabulous lemon dessert. This was a masterclass in balance, featuring a smooth, zesty lemon cream that provided a vibrant citrus burst. It rested on a perfectly buttery shortbread base, offering a delightful crunch and richness. Capped with delicate meringue, small, tart berries, and a single mint leaf, this dessert was a symphony of flavors and textures. It provided a refreshing counterpoint to the rich chocolate, leaving us both thoroughly satisfied and impressed by the pastry chef’s talent.

Beyond the Meal: Exploring the Nord Pas de Calais Region
Our entire meal at La Sirene Cap Gris Nez was an exquisite journey for the senses. From the first sip of Champagne to the last bite of dessert, every moment was enhanced by the stunning coastal views and the impeccable service. It was difficult to tear ourselves away from such a picturesque setting – we truly could have spent the entire day admiring the gorgeous ocean vista. However, our adventure in the Nord Pas de Calais region was far from over, and it was time to meet our guide for a nature walk in the nearby area of Wissant.
The beauty of dining at La Sirene is its proximity to other captivating attractions along the Côte d’Opale. Before or after your meal, you can explore the rugged trails of Cap Gris Nez, visit charming coastal towns, or even delve into the wonders of the marine world at Nausicaá Aquarium in Boulogne-sur-Mer. La Sirene serves not just as a dining destination but as a perfect anchor for exploring the rich natural and cultural heritage of this vibrant French region.
