A Long Search for Authentic Mexican Food in Paris Ends at Bocamexa
Having lived in Paris for 16 years, I can attest to the scarcity of genuinely good Mexican restaurants, especially those offering burritos. For years, my quest for an authentic burrito experience in the city was fruitless. Most Mexican establishments I encountered tended to focus on fajitas and enchiladas, often with a French twist that, while sometimes pleasant, didn’t quite hit the mark for true Mexican comfort food. The very idea of finding a dedicated burrito on a Parisian menu seemed almost impossible.
It was a truly exciting moment when I finally stumbled upon Bocamexa. It wasn’t just another Mexican-inspired eatery; it was a revelation. Here, the burrito wasn’t an afterthought or a fusion dish – it was a star. The vibrant flavors, the carefully selected ingredients, and the unmistakable authenticity immediately transported me back to the Mexican kitchens I remembered fondly. Bocamexa filled a void I hadn’t realized was so profound, offering a taste of Mexico that had long been missing from the Parisian culinary scene. If you, like me, have been searching for that elusive, perfect burrito, your search ends here. And should you have other Mexican restaurant recommendations, please do share them in the comments; I’m always keen to expand my culinary horizons and will be compiling a list of the best Mexican restaurants in Paris soon.

Bocamexa’s Menu: A Celebration of Authentic Mexican Flavors
At the heart of Bocamexa’s appeal is its simple yet incredibly flavorful menu, deeply rooted in authentic Mexican culinary traditions. They pride themselves on offering dishes that are not only delicious but also true to their origins. While their burritos are legendary, the menu extends to a delightful array of other Mexican favorites, ensuring there’s something for everyone.
The Legendary Burritos
The burritos at Bocamexa are a must-try. Each one is a carefully constructed masterpiece, packed with your choice of succulent meats – be it tender marinated chicken, slow-cooked beef, or savory pork carnitas – paired with fluffy rice, hearty beans, fresh salsa, creamy guacamole, and a generous helping of cheese, all wrapped in a warm, soft tortilla. What sets them apart is the freshness of the ingredients and the perfect balance of flavors, creating a satisfying and unforgettable meal that truly tastes like Mexico.
Crispy Quesadillas & Zesty Tacos
Beyond the burritos, Bocamexa’s quesadillas are a delightful indulgence, with melted cheese and your choice of fillings grilled to perfection between two tortillas. The tacos, served in traditional soft corn tortillas, offer a burst of flavor with every bite, allowing you to sample various fillings and toppings. Each taco is a miniature canvas of Mexican culinary art.
Fresh & Flavorful Salads
For those seeking a lighter option, their salads are anything but ordinary. They feature the same high-quality proteins and fresh vegetables found in their other dishes, all brought together with authentic Mexican dressings, offering a refreshing yet equally satisfying experience.
Every item on the menu is prepared right in front of your eyes, ensuring transparency and freshness. This commitment to quality and authenticity is what makes Bocamexa a standout Mexican restaurant in Paris, a place where you can genuinely taste the passion for Mexican cuisine.
The Inspiring History of Bocamexa: A Love Story Rooted in Flavor
The story of Bocamexa is as rich and heartwarming as its food, beginning with a serendipitous encounter that blossomed into a culinary empire. It all started when Julien Zattara met Alejandra, a spirited student from Mexico, during their studies at the prestigious Institut Paul Bocuse in Lyon. Their shared passion for food, culture, and perhaps, a few too many shots of tequila, ignited a connection that would eventually lead them down the aisle and, ultimately, to the bustling streets of Paris.
Four years after their wedding, in 2010, their dream took a tangible form when they secured the keys to their first restaurant location on Rue Mouffetard in Paris. This initial venture was born from a desire to bring the vibrant, authentic flavors of Alejandra’s homeland to a city where genuine Mexican cuisine was a rarity. Their dedication, combined with Julien’s culinary training and Alejandra’s authentic recipes, quickly established Bocamexa as a destination for those seeking true Mexican taste. From a chance meeting to a beloved Parisian institution, their journey is a testament to the power of passion and cultural exchange.
Beyond the Plate: Artisanal Beer and Legendary Frozen Margaritas at Bocamexa
Bocamexa isn’t just about incredible food; it’s also a destination for exceptional drinks that perfectly complement their vibrant menu. They understand that a complete Mexican dining experience includes carefully crafted beverages, and they deliver with their unique artisanal beer and some of the best frozen margaritas in Paris.
La Bière Nacional: Bocamexa’s Home-Brewed Gem
In 2015, Bocamexa took its commitment to authenticity a step further with the creation of “la bière Nacional,” their very own home-brewed beer. This artisanal beer was developed to perfectly pair with their spicy and flavorful dishes, offering a refreshing counterpoint to the rich burritos and tacos. My companion, Hugo, tried it and was thoroughly impressed by its distinctive character and crisp finish, highlighting its quality as a genuine craft beer developed with a deep understanding of Mexican flavors.
The Unforgettable Frozen Margarita
For me, a trip to Bocamexa isn’t complete without indulging in their frozen margarita. Often, frozen margaritas can be overly sweet or lack the authentic tang of lime and tequila. However, Bocamexa’s version is a masterful blend of premium tequila, fresh lime juice, and just the right amount of sweetness, all blended into a perfectly slushy consistency. It’s truly one of the best I have ever tried, offering a refreshing and invigorating sip that perfectly cuts through the richness of the food and enhances the overall dining experience.
These thoughtfully curated drink options elevate Bocamexa from merely a great Mexican restaurant to a comprehensive culinary and social destination, inviting guests to linger and enjoy the full spectrum of Mexican hospitality.
Relaxed & Inviting: The Vibrant Mexican Ambiance at Bocamexa
The atmosphere at Bocamexa is as integral to the experience as the food itself. These particular photos offer a glimpse into the lively location in the 2nd arrondissement, a spot we’ve found ourselves drawn back to repeatedly. Indeed, in the very first week we discovered this particular branch, we returned twice for burritos and drinks – it’s truly that captivating and delicious!
Upon entering, you are immediately greeted by an inviting, dynamic scene. Right in front of you, the magic happens: skilled chefs meticulously assemble burritos, quesadillas, tacos, and salads, allowing you to witness the freshness and care that goes into each dish. This open kitchen concept adds to the authentic, casual vibe, making you feel connected to the culinary process.
To your right, the indoor dining area welcomes you with its vibrant decor. Expect cheerful, colorful tables that reflect the lively spirit of Mexico, alongside comfortable seating options, including a cozy couch nestled near the open, front-facing windows. This arrangement allows natural light to flood the space, creating a bright and airy feel, especially on a sunny Parisian day. If you prefer a more informal setting, you can opt for bar stools at smaller, high tables, perfect for a quick bite or people-watching. On our last visit, we chose to sit on these bar stools, right in front of the open glass front. It was a beautiful summer day, and the ability to enjoy our delicious food while soaking in the Parisian street life truly enhanced the experience. The combination of mouth-watering food and a relaxed, authentically Mexican ambiance makes Bocamexa a place you’ll want to return to again and again.
Bringing Mexico Home: The Bocamexa Mexican Grocery Shop (Épicerie)
Bocamexa extends its authentic Mexican experience beyond dining in, offering a unique opportunity to bring the flavors of Mexico directly into your own kitchen. Inside each Bocamexa restaurant, you’ll find a dedicated Mexican grocery shop, or “épicerie,” stocked with an impressive array of authentic ingredients. This allows patrons to recreate a touch of Bocamexa’s magic at home or simply explore new culinary horizons.
Here, you can browse and purchase all the essentials your heart desires for crafting your own Mexican feasts. From a diverse selection of Mexican sauces, ranging from mild to intensely spicy, to authentic corn and flour tortillas, aromatic spices, and traditional marinades, the épicerie has it all. Beyond the cooking staples, you’ll also find a curated collection of fine tequilas and a variety of hot peppers, perfect for adventurous cooks and connoisseurs alike. It’s a treasure trove for anyone passionate about Mexican cuisine, making Bocamexa a one-stop shop for both dining out and culinary exploration.
Bocamexa’s Growth: Four Locations and a Thriving Food Truck
Bocamexa’s journey from a single restaurant to a beloved multi-location establishment is a testament to its quality and popularity. Recognizing the widespread craving for authentic Mexican food, Bocamexa has strategically expanded, making it incredibly easy for Parisians and visitors alike to satisfy their Mexican food cravings, regardless of which neighborhood they find themselves in.
The original restaurant, which first opened its doors in 2010, is located in the historic 5th arrondissement, a vibrant area known for its Latin Quarter charm. Following the success of this initial venture, Bocamexa extended its reach with additional locations across Paris. You can now find their delicious offerings in the bustling 11th, the dynamic 10th, and the chic 2nd arrondissements, providing convenient access to a wider audience.
Adding to their accessibility and popularity, Bocamexa also launched a food truck, originally known as “Food Truck Señor Boca.” This mobile kitchen quickly became a hit, bringing authentic Mexican street food directly to various events and locations around the city. It eventually integrated fully under the Bocamexa brand, further cementing their presence in Paris’s culinary scene. This period of expansion, between 2010 and 2016, saw Bocamexa rapidly grow, demonstrating their commitment to sharing the true taste of Mexico with the entire city. With multiple fixed locations and a mobile unit, Bocamexa ensures that a delicious, authentic Mexican meal is never too far away.
