#5 Explore the Charming 9 Streets (De Negen Straatjes)

Nestled within Amsterdam’s iconic canal belt, the 9 Streets (De Negen Straatjes) form one of the city’s most picturesque and vibrant districts. This area, bordered by Prinsengracht, Keizersgracht, Herengracht, and Singel, and just a stone’s throw from the Royal Palace on Dam Square, is a shopper’s paradise and a delightful place to simply wander.

The nine narrow streets are brimming with unique boutiques, vintage shops, cozy cafes, and art galleries, making it ideal for discovering one-of-a-kind treasures. Beyond shopping, the architectural beauty and serene canal views make it perfect for a leisurely stroll. Spend an afternoon getting lost in its charm, soaking in the authentic Amsterdam atmosphere, and perhaps finding that perfect souvenir.

#6 Indulge in Amsterdam’s Best Fries at Fabel Friet

Forget everything you thought you knew about French fries; Amsterdam’s frites are an experience unto themselves! Even if fries aren’t typically your go-to snack, you absolutely must try them here. The crispy exterior, fluffy interior, and incredible sauces elevate this simple street food to an art form.

Our top recommendation for the best fries in Amsterdam is undoubtedly Fabel Friet. While their signature creation features exquisite truffle mayonnaise and generous heaps of grated Parmesan cheese – a truly decadent treat – we also implore you to try them slathered in their fiery Piccalilli sauce. This spicy, mayonnaise-like condiment (similar to a Belgian Samourai sauce) offers an irresistible kick. If your trip allows, why not visit twice and savor both phenomenal options? Each bite is a journey!

Address: Fabel Friet has several locations. We’ve often found shorter lines at the Oude Hoogstraat 21, 1012 CD Amsterdam location, making it easier to grab your delicious snack!

#7 Grab a Herring Sandwich On-the-Go

A true Dutch culinary adventure isn’t complete without trying a traditional herring sandwich. This quintessential street food might sound intimidating with its “fishy and slimy” reputation, but it’s surprisingly delicious and a deeply ingrained part of local culture. The sandwich typically features delicate marinated herring, often served with raw onions and pickles, all nestled within a soft, hot dog-style bun.

We ventured to Frens Haringhandel, a renowned herring stand, to try their famous creation. While it wasn’t my personal top food pick, I found it remarkably tasty. My travel companion, Hugo, however, absolutely adored it and was so inspired he attempted to recreate it back home in Paris! It’s an authentic experience that gives you a genuine taste of Dutch tradition.

#8 Immerse Yourself in Art at the Rijksmuseum

No Amsterdam bucket list is complete without a visit to the magnificent Rijksmuseum, the national museum of the Netherlands. It’s the ultimate destination to discover and experience an unparalleled collection of Dutch masterpieces, spanning centuries of art and history. From medieval artifacts to iconic works from the Dutch Golden Age, the museum is a treasure trove of cultural heritage.

Prepare your taste buds for a truly divine Dutch treat: slagroom truffels. These delicate, cocoa-dusted truffles are generously filled with luscious whipped cream (or slagroom in Dutch), creating a melt-in-your-mouth experience that is nothing short of heavenly. Since our first encounter, we’ve been dreaming of returning to Lanskroon Bakery to indulge in these exquisite confections once more.

Lanskroon Bakery offers these little bites of bliss, perfectly showcasing a traditional Dutch pastry that’s both simple and sophisticated. They make for an ideal afternoon pick-me-up or a delightful dessert after exploring the city. #10 Stroll Along Amsterdam’s Canals, Day and Night

One of the most enriching and quintessential activities in Amsterdam is simply walking, particularly along its iconic canals. The city’s beauty truly comes alive as you wander beside the water, admiring the elegant canal houses, charming bridges, and bustling boat traffic. Each turn reveals a new picturesque scene, making it a photographer’s paradise and a walker’s delight.

It’s crucial to experience these walks both during the day and at night, as the ambiance transforms completely. By day, the canals shimmer under the sun, reflecting the vibrant architecture and lively atmosphere. By night, the city takes on a magical glow as bridges and buildings are illuminated, creating a romantic and serene setting. For the full, unforgettable experience, dedicate time to both perspectives – you won’t regret witnessing Amsterdam’s dual charm!

#11 Recharge with Specialty Coffee at Back to Black

For coffee connoisseurs and those simply needing a revitalizing break, Back to Black is our absolute favorite specialty coffee shop in Amsterdam. This cozy spot offers a welcoming respite from your explorations, serving up expertly crafted coffees, soothing matcha, and aromatic chai lattes.

Grab a warm drink to go and continue your urban adventure, or settle in for a while to rest your legs, especially during a chilly Amsterdam winter. It’s an ideal place for some quiet reflection or engaging in one of our favorite pastimes: people-watching. The quality of the beverages and the inviting atmosphere make it a perfect fuel stop to power through your Amsterdam bucket list.

Step back in time and gain a fascinating insight into the life and work of one of the Dutch Golden Age’s most celebrated artists, Rembrandt van Rijn, by visiting his former home and studio. The Rembrandt House Museum has been meticulously restored to reflect how it would have looked during the 17th century when Rembrandt lived and worked there.

Explore his living quarters, his impressive studio where he painted many of his masterpieces, and his collection of art and curiosities. It’s a truly personal experience, allowing you to connect with the artist in an intimate setting. #13 Find a Unique Antique Souvenir at Kramer Kunst & Antiek

Every unforgettable trip deserves a special memento, and for those who appreciate history and uniqueness, an antique souvenir from the Netherlands is perfect. As avid antique hunters, we constantly seek out distinctive items, and Kramer Kunst & Antiek offers a delightful array of tiny treasures that fit the bill beautifully.

Located at Prinsengracht 807, this charming shop is a haven for collectors. You’ll be particularly captivated by their extensive collection of vintage Delft KLM porcelain houses. These highly collectible miniature houses, created in collaboration between KLM Airlines and BOLS Gin, are traditionally given as gifts to business and first-class passengers. Each numbered house represents an actual building in the Netherlands and comes filled with BOLS Gin. We proudly acquired house #53 as a cherished souvenir of our Christmas spent in an Amsterdam canal house! #14 Savor Irresistible Cookies at Banketbakkerij Het Koekemannetje

Having lived in Paris for over two decades, I, an American expat, have been on a relentless quest for truly amazing cookies in Europe. My search finally ended triumphantly in Amsterdam, at Banketbakkerij Het Koekemannetje. This delightful bakery was a recommendation from local friends, and we are eternally grateful for their insider tip.

The cookies here were nothing short of spectacular. Their texture and flavor profile are exactly what a perfect cookie should be – crispy edges with a soft, chewy center. We were so smitten that we returned three times during our two-week stay! Whether you prefer classic chocolate chip or something more adventurous, these cookies are a mandatory treat for any sweet tooth visiting Amsterdam. Don’t miss out on what we consider the best cookies in the city.

#15 Enjoy Hot Wine at the Museumplein Christmas Market

If your Amsterdam adventure takes place during the festive holiday season, a visit to the Museumplein Christmas market is an absolute must. This enchanting market transforms the iconic Museumplein into a winter wonderland, brimming with festive cheer and twinkling lights. The highlight for many is indulging in a steaming cup of glühwein, or hot spiced wine, a perfect remedy for the crisp winter air.

Beyond the delicious drinks and seasonal treats, the market also offers the joyful activity of ice skating, adding to the magical atmosphere. It’s an ideal spot to soak up the holiday spirit, find unique gifts, and create warm, cherished memories of a winter trip to Amsterdam. Bundle up and enjoy the festive charm!

#16 Buy Tulip Bulbs at the Historic Flower Market

The Amsterdam flower market, or Bloemenmarkt, is a uniquely charming and vibrant attraction that captivates visitors with its colorful displays and fragrant air. This floating market, nestled along the Singel canal, is a beautiful celebration of the Netherlands’ deep connection to floriculture. It’s a wonderful place to pick up fresh cut flowers to brighten your hotel room or rental apartment – a small luxury that makes slow travel even more enjoyable.

Of course, no visit is complete without browsing the incredible selection of flower bulbs. While the Netherlands is world-renowned for its tulips, you’ll find an astonishing variety of other flower bulbs to choose from. These make an exquisite and lasting souvenir from Amsterdam. The vendors are experts at carefully packaging your bulbs and providing the necessary agricultural certificates, ensuring a smooth journey home with your botanical treasures. Imagine your garden blooming with a piece of Amsterdam!

#17 Taste Authentic Stroopwafels at Rudi’s Original Stroopwafels

While many vendors in Amsterdam claim to offer the “best” stroopwafels, our hearts (and taste buds!) are firmly set on Rudi’s Original Stroopwafels. These iconic Dutch treats are truly divine when served hot and gooey, fresh from the waffle iron, especially at the bustling Albert Cuypmarket.

Head straight to their food truck to witness the magic as a fresh stroopwafel is made before your eyes – two thin waffles pressed together with a sweet caramel-like syrup filling. The warmth and rich flavor are incomparable. Beyond immediate gratification, be sure to pick up a tin (or several!) of their packaged stroopwafels. They make perfect gifts for loved ones back home or a delightful reminder of your Amsterdam adventure to enjoy later with a cup of coffee or tea.

Address: Albert Cuyp Straat, t/o 182, 1073 BL Amsterdam

#18 Go Grocery Shopping at Albert Heijn

Is it just us, or is exploring foreign grocery stores one of the underrated joys of travel? For us, a trip to Albert Heijn in Amsterdam is an exciting cultural immersion, offering a fascinating glimpse into local life and culinary preferences. We always love discovering products that differ from what we find in Paris.

During our last visit, we were delighted to find a much larger selection of Mexican products, including our favorite sauces, which are hard to come by in France! We definitely stocked up. Beyond personal quests, Albert Heijn is perfect for picking up quintessential Dutch items like Tony’s Chocolonely chocolate bars, a variety of Gouda and other Dutch cheeses, stroopwafel ice cream, and charming souvenir tins (often filled with more stroopwafels!). It’s a fun and practical way to uncover local treasures and bring a taste of Amsterdam home.

Address: Albert Heijn has numerous locations throughout Amsterdam, making it easy to find one near your accommodation.

#19 Experience “High Wine” at The Dylan

You’ve likely heard of high tea, but allow us to introduce you to its sophisticated and slightly more spirited cousin: “high wine.” This delightful experience involves relaxing in an elegant setting, sampling several exquisite wines, expertly paired with an array of delicious savory and sweet snacks. It’s every bit as enjoyable as it sounds, offering a refined yet relaxed way to spend an afternoon.

The very best “high wine” experience in Amsterdam can be found at The Dylan, typically served in the afternoon. The Dylan itself is a stunning, chic hotel with an equally beautiful bar that provides the perfect ambiance. It’s an ideal spot to unwind, soak in the gorgeous decor, and indulge in some wonderful wine and gourmet bites. Treat yourself to this luxurious Dutch twist on a classic afternoon indulgence.

Address: Keizersgracht 384, 1016 GB Amsterdam

#20 Enjoy a Drink at The Monkey Bar (In’t Aepjen)

Step into history and enjoy a unique drink at In’t Aepjen, affectionately known as The Monkey Bar – our absolute favorite “brown bar” in Amsterdam. Brown bars are traditional Dutch pubs, characterized by their cozy, often wood-paneled interiors and old-world charm, and this one boasts a truly intriguing origin story.

Dating back to the 1600s, sailors arriving from exotic lands would frequent this establishment. Lacking cash, they sometimes settled their extensive bar tabs by leaving their pet monkeys as payment. The bar eventually became home to so many monkeys that a flea infestation became inevitable. Legend has it that the exasperated owner eventually gifted all the monkeys to a wealthy client, whose large garden became their new home, and ultimately evolved into the very first Amsterdam Zoo! This fascinating tale, combined with the bar’s authentic atmosphere, makes it a must-visit for a taste of Amsterdam’s colorful past and a great drink. For more details, read our post The Monkey Bar Amsterdam (In’t Aepjen).

#21 Savor Authentic Bagels at Breadwinner

As a New Yorker who has called Paris home for two decades, my search for truly excellent bagels in Europe has been a long and often disappointing one. That is, until my last trip to Amsterdam, when I finally stepped through the doors of Breadwinner Amsterdam. Recommended by our local friends, this establishment was a revelation.

The bagels at Breadwinner boast that elusive perfect texture – chewy on the inside, with a satisfying crust – a characteristic often missing from European counterparts. They offer an impressive variety of both bagels and toppings. From classic cream cheese and smoked salmon (both traditional and cooked options) to savory pastrami, there’s something for everyone. And for those like me, who cherish the perfect blend of garlic, onion, poppy, and sesame, the everything bagel is an absolute dream come true. For authentic, New York-style bagels that truly deliver, Breadwinner is an unmissable stop on your Amsterdam foodie adventure!

Address: Tweede Laurierdwarsstraat 50HS, 1016 RC Amsterdam

#22 Discover a Delft Treasure at Heinen Delfts Blauw

Beyond the vintage finds at antique shops, a visit to a Heinen Delfts Blauw boutique offers the opportunity to bring home a contemporary piece of iconic Dutch heritage. Delftware, with its distinctive blue and white designs, has been a symbol of the Netherlands for centuries. At Heinen Delfts Blauw, you can explore modern interpretations and collections, finding items that blend traditional craftsmanship with contemporary aesthetics.

Browse a beautiful selection of bowls, tea cups, decorative tiles, and other home items that will serve as a lovely reminder of your trip. We particularly admire the “Sharing Moments Monkeys” and “Sharing Moments Nhaan” collections by Janny van der Heijden, as well as the classic “Paauw Blauw” collection. We chose some charming pieces from the “Sharing Moments Monkeys” collection, and they’ve brought a touch of Amsterdam’s elegance to our home ever since, making for a truly treasured souvenir.

Address: Heinen Delfts Blauw has several locations; our favorite is at Rokin 72, 1012 KW Amsterdam (example, as original text did not provide specific address).

#23 Enjoy a Traditional Dutch Dinner at The Pantry

For an authentic taste of Dutch cuisine in a warm and inviting atmosphere, The Pantry is our top recommendation for a traditional Dutch dinner in Amsterdam. Conveniently located in the city center, this restaurant offers delicious, hearty Dutch food at great prices, all served by the friendliest staff. The charming traditional Dutch decor inside truly enhances the dining experience, making you feel right at home.

Our favorite dishes included the goat cheese croquettes to start, followed by a comforting baked dish featuring beef, cauliflower, Old Amsterdam cheese, onion, and mashed potatoes (their vegetarian version is equally delightful!). For a sweet finish, the poffertjes were absolutely perfect. The Pantry provides an ideal setting to savor classic Dutch flavors and enjoy a truly local dining experience.

Address: Leidsekruisstraat 21, 1017 RE Amsterdam

#24 Celebrate Moms (and Delicious Food) at Moeder’s

Moeder’s offers a wonderfully unique and heartwarming dining experience in Amsterdam, celebrating mothers everywhere with its distinctive theme. This traditional Dutch restaurant is famously adorned with countless photos of mothers, creating an incredibly charming and personal atmosphere. The concept is genuinely endearing, and thankfully, the food is just as delicious as the idea is cute.

It’s the perfect spot to enjoy classic Dutch comfort food in a setting filled with warmth and nostalgia. If you happen to be in Amsterdam during Mother’s Day, or simply want to honor the matriarchs in your life, Moeder’s provides a memorable and touching culinary experience that feels like a hug in a meal.

Address: Rozengracht 251, 1016 SX Amsterdam

#25 Picnic and Relax at Vondelpark

Vondelpark, Amsterdam’s most famous and beloved urban park, is a magnificent green oasis offering a perfect escape from the city’s bustling streets. Spanning nearly 120 acres, it’s an ideal spot for a leisurely stroll, a bike ride, or simply unwinding amidst nature. If the weather permits, packing a picnic to enjoy on its sprawling lawns is a truly delightful experience and a fantastic way to spend an afternoon like a local.

The park is beautifully landscaped with ponds, sculptures, and open-air theaters, often hosting free concerts and performances during warmer months. Find a cozy spot under a tree, lay out your blanket, and savor some local treats while soaking in the relaxed atmosphere. Vondelpark offers a refreshing contrast to the historical canals, providing a peaceful haven and a vibrant community space all in one.

Address: Vondelpark

#26 Savor an Indonesian Dinner at Sampurna

Given the Netherlands’ historical ties to Indonesia, it’s no surprise that Indonesian cuisine is a must-try culinary experience in Amsterdam. The city boasts an impressive array of Indonesian restaurants, offering everything from classic dishes to elaborate rijsttafels (rice tables). For an authentic and delectable Indonesian dinner, we highly recommend the lovely Sampurna.

Sampurna provides a rich culinary journey in a beautifully decorated setting, where the opulent gold decor perfectly complements the delicious flavors. Be sure to try traditional favorites like chicken satay, a flavorful dish of grilled skewers served with a rich peanut sauce, or explore their diverse menu that showcases the vibrant spices and unique flavors of Indonesian cooking. It’s a delightful cultural and gastronomic experience.

Address: Singel 498, 1017 AX Amsterdam

#27 Cozy Up by the Fireplace at Cafe de Wetering

Amsterdam is famed for its “brown bars” – traditional, cozy pubs that exude a rustic charm. While we’ve explored and loved many of them, Cafe de Wetering holds a truly special place. Nestled in the Spiegelkwartier, Amsterdam’s arts and antiques district, this beautiful brown bar is housed within a magnificent seventeenth-century canal house, adding layers of history and character to its appeal.

What truly sets Cafe de Wetering apart is its incredibly inviting ambiance, especially during cooler months. You can take your beer or glass of wine upstairs and settle in front of their roaring fireplace, a rare and delightful feature in city bars. It’s an exceptionally charming and cozy experience, perfect for a relaxed evening, enjoying good company and soaking in the unique atmosphere that only Amsterdam’s historic brown bars can offer.

Address: Weteringstraat 37, 1017 SM Amsterdam

#28 Taste Delightful Poffertjes (Dutch Mini Pancakes)

Despite several trips to the Netherlands, the delightful discovery of poffertjes on our most recent Amsterdam visit was a joyous revelation! These tiny, fluffy pancakes are an absolute revelation and a must-try Dutch treat. Made in a special cast-iron pan (which, amusingly, resembles an escargot dish), poffertjes are typically served warm with a dusting of powdered sugar and a generous knob of butter.

Their light, airy texture and sweet flavor are utterly irresistible, making them a perfect snack or dessert at any time of day. We loved them so much that we even bought a special poffertjes pan to bring home, allowing us to recreate this sweet memory. If you enjoy cooking and unique kitchen gadgets, acquiring a poffertjes pan could be an intriguing and delicious souvenir, bringing a piece of Dutch culinary tradition into your own kitchen!

#29 Explore the Flavors of Surinamese Food

Amsterdam’s diverse culinary landscape offers a unique opportunity to delve into Surinamese cuisine, a delicious fusion of flavors reflecting its rich history. Suriname, a former Dutch colony in Northern South America, boasts a cuisine influenced by Dutch, Caribbean, Indian, Chinese, African, and European traditions. This incredible blend of cultures resulted from historical migrations, and when Suriname gained independence in 1975, about half of its population opted for Dutch citizenship, bringing their vibrant culinary heritage to the Netherlands.

The best place to sample authentic Surinamese food in Amsterdam is concentrated around the Albert Cuypmarket in the lively De Pijp neighborhood. We highly recommend visiting De Tokoman, Albina (located at Albert Cuypstraat 69), or Riaz (Bilderdijkstraat 193) for some of the most flavorful and authentic Surinamese dishes the city has to offer. Prepare for a culinary journey unlike any other!

#30 Send Yourself a Postcard from Amsterdam

This final item on our Amsterdam bucket list is a cherished personal tradition that we encourage everyone to adopt: sending yourself a postcard! It’s a simple, inexpensive, yet incredibly heartwarming ritual that creates a tangible memory of your travels. During each trip, we select one (or sometimes several!) postcards, filling them with brief notes to ourselves – anecdotes from the day, favorite moments, new discoveries, or just a little personal message.

The joy of finding these postcards waiting in our mailbox upon returning home, or receiving them days later, is truly special. It offers a wonderful moment of reflection, allowing you to relive the memories of your trip. Over the years, we’ve amassed hundreds of these cards, each a little time capsule of past adventures. It’s a delightful way to keep the spirit of your travels alive and a constant source of fond recollections.
