Your grand Moroccan adventure begins in the vibrant city of Marrakech! Upon arrival, depending on your flight schedule, you might want to ease into the city’s rhythm. We often recommend a leisurely walk through your neighborhood to get a first impression, absorbing the sights and sounds of this magical city.

When we arrived in Marrakech in the early evening, it allowed us just enough time to settle into our beautiful riad, enjoy a delicious dinner, and unwind with refreshing mint tea on the rooftop. Under the magnificent moon and a sky full of stars, it was the perfect tranquil end to our first day, setting us up for an exciting start to our explorations the following morning.

Marrakech Accommodation Suggestions

For your stay in Marrakech, we enjoyed two distinct experiences: Riad Be and La Maison Arabe. Both offer unique charms, catering to different preferences and budgets, but both provide an authentic and comfortable stay within the heart of the city.

Riad Be stands out as a wonderfully affordable yet charming option, perfectly situated in the bustling heart of Marrakech. Its decor is exquisite, the rooms are comfortable, and the staff’s dedication to making your stay perfect is truly remarkable. Don’t miss their rooftop bar, which serves excellent fresh orange juice and tasty meals. The breakfast here was one of the highlights of our entire trip!

For a taste of Marrakech’s storied past, consider La Maison Arabe, a legendary hotel with a rich history. Originally the first restaurant in the medina to welcome foreigners in the 1940s, it was meticulously restored in the 1990s to become Marrakech’s first luxury boutique riad-hotel. This exquisite property boasts a stunning spa, a refreshing pool, and access to an off-site “country club” with another pool, all at no extra cost. Enjoy the sophisticated ambiance of its jazz bar and indulge in culinary delights at its three fantastic restaurants.

Book your historic stay at La Maison Arabe, Marrakech.

For the ultimate indulgence, Marrakech is home to one of the world’s best hotels: Le Royal Mansour. Here, every guest enjoys a stay in their own private, luxurious riad, complete with a dedicated butler attending to every need. The hotel also features exquisite on-site pools, elegant bars, and incredible restaurants. A stay at Le Royal Mansour promises an unparalleled luxury experience in Marrakech, rumour has it, with a rose gold Range Rover whisking you from the airport! While we didn’t stay, we savored a truly special meal there, which we’ll tell you more about later.

Dinner at Riad Be

For your first evening, a relaxed dinner at your riad is often the best choice after travel. Many of Marrakech’s finest hotels and riads boast excellent restaurants. At Riad Be, you can savor a delightful array of Moroccan specialties. Their menu typically features flavorful couscous, traditional tagines, and a variety of delicious appetizers, with ample vegetarian options to choose from. It’s the perfect introduction to Moroccan cuisine in a cozy, authentic setting.

Day 2: Exploring Marrakech’s Culture and Souks

Your second day in Marrakech is dedicated to delving into the city’s rich history, stunning architecture, and bustling markets. Start your morning bright and early at Dar el Bacha.

Dar el Bacha: Museum of Confluences

Begin your day at Dar el Bacha, also known as the Museum of Confluences, a magnificent palace located within Marrakech’s old medina. Built in 1910 as the residence of Thami El Glaoui, the Pasha of Marrakech, this palace was transformed into a museum in 2017. You’ll be captivated by its exquisite architecture, intricate mosaics, beautifully carved wooden ceilings, and serene fountains. The stunning central courtyard, filled with the sweet scent of orange blossoms, offers a peaceful retreat from the city’s hustle and bustle.

A visit here offers a glimpse into a traditional palace riad layout, with a central garden surrounded by six rooms on each side. The museum also showcases a fascinating collection of primitive and antique artifacts, meticulously gathered by American philanthropist Patti Birch. Purchase your tickets directly on-site, and try to arrive at 9 AM when they open to minimize wait times.

Bacha Coffee

Located within the Dar el Bacha museum, Bacha Coffee is an incredibly popular and highly-rated cafe in Marrakech – and it absolutely lives up to the hype! To navigate the queues (we were told of a two-hour wait!), we recommend putting your name down for a table as soon as you arrive, before you begin exploring the museum. By the time we finished our museum visit, we only had a short 20-minute wait in the beautiful garden before experiencing the cafe.

Bacha Coffee is a truly unique establishment, renowned for its vast selection of filtered coffees, elegantly served in exquisite gold coffee pots. They also offer a tempting array of mostly French pastries. The opulent setting and the exceptional coffee experience make it well worth the wait.

Lunch at Nomad Café

For lunch, head to The Nomad Cafe, a celebrated restaurant in Marrakech known for its beautiful rooftop terrace offering panoramic views of the medina. Whether you choose indoor or outdoor seating, you’ll be delighted by their fresh and innovative menu. We highly recommend starting with their seasonal mezzes, a flavorful assortment of small dishes. For a main, the vegetarian barley couscous was a particular favorite. We also ventured to try the sardine meatballs tagine, which, while interesting, proved a bit too intensely fishy for our taste despite our usual love for sardines! Conclude your meal with their refreshing sorbets; the Berber Tea (a unique blend of sage, geranium, marjoram, wild mint, and lemon) and raspberry with Moroccan rose flavors were absolutely exquisite.

Le Jardin Secret

Just a short 6-minute walk from Nomad Cafe, you’ll discover Le Jardin Secret, a stunning oasis in the heart of the medina. This beautiful Moroccan garden is divided into two distinct sections: an exquisite Islamic garden, reflecting traditional design principles, and a vibrant exotic garden, showcasing diverse flora. For a more complete experience, we highly recommend paying the extra fee to explore the riad itself. Tickets can be purchased directly on-site.

Before leaving, browse the charming gift shop for chic souvenirs and unique gifts. You can also unwind at the cute cafe within the garden, enjoying mint tea, coffee, fresh juice, or a smoothie, along with a selection of snacks, tagines, pizzas, and salads. It’s a perfect spot to relax and soak in the tranquil atmosphere.

Souk Semmarine

No visit to Marrakech is complete without a deep dive into its legendary souks. Souk Semmarine is the main artery of the Marrakech souks, a wide, covered alley brimming with an incredible array of goods. Here, you’ll find everything from vibrant pottery and exquisite textiles to gleaming brass lanterns, ornate mirrors, delicate teapots and tea cups, flowing kaftans, soft pashminas, and much more. It’s a true treasure trove for unique souvenirs that capture the essence of Morocco. Whether you’re a fashion enthusiast, an interior design lover, or a passionate cook, Souk Semmarine will undoubtedly pique your interest with its endless offerings.

La Pâtisserie des Princes

After navigating the lively souks, treat yourself to something sweet at La Pâtisserie des Princes. The selection of pastries here is simply out of this world! You’ll be greeted by a vast and enticing display of authentic and utterly delicious Moroccan pastries, alongside a tempting array of freshly made ice cream. With so many delectable options, you’ll likely find yourself drawn back to this delightful spot multiple times throughout your stay in Marrakech.

Shopping at Ensemble Artisinal

For a more relaxed shopping experience, head to Ensemble Artisinal. This government-run complex features a variety of local Moroccan products, similar to what you’d find in the souks, but with the added benefit of fixed prices. Here, you can find high-quality Argan oil products, beautiful leather goods like poufs and slippers, intricate silver jewelry, and charming lanterns, among other crafts.

Shopping at Ensemble Artisinal is a pleasant alternative to the haggling culture of the souks. You can purchase items directly here, or use it as an opportunity to gauge fair prices for different goods before venturing into the souks to negotiate with vendors. It’s a fantastic way to support local artisans and take home authentic Moroccan treasures.

Street Food Tour for Dinner

To truly immerse yourself in Marrakech’s culinary scene and interact with locals, a street food tour is an excellent choice for dinner. It’s a fantastic way to sample a wide variety of delicious Moroccan dishes.

We had planned to join this highly-rated Marrakech Food Tour by Night, but unfortunately, it was canceled during our visit due to Ramadan. If you’re keen to experience this, we strongly recommend booking your spot well in advance, as these popular tours tend to sell out quickly, ensuring you don’t miss out on a flavorful evening.

Day 3: Marrakech to the Atlas Mountains

On Day 3, trade the bustling city for the majestic tranquility of the Atlas Mountains. The scenic drive from Marrakech typically takes about an hour to an hour and a half by car. Your hotel in Marrakech can easily arrange a taxi or private transfer to your chosen accommodation in the mountains.

If you prefer to maximize your time in Marrakech, you also have the option of visiting the Atlas Mountains on a day trip. Consider booking the comprehensive Atlas Mountains, Berber Villages and Waterfall Tour, which departs from and returns to Marrakech within a single day, offering a fantastic overview of the region’s natural beauty and culture.

Atlas Mountains Accommodation

For an exceptional stay in the Atlas Mountains, we highly recommend Kasbah Bab Ourika (booking directly is usually required). Our experience here was truly one of a kind, making it one of our favorite hotels we’ve ever visited. This kasbah offers an incredible blend of traditional charm and modern comfort, set against a backdrop of breathtaking mountain views. You will not be disappointed!

Most activities in the Atlas Mountains region, especially when staying at a kasbah like ours, are conveniently organized directly through the hotel. While the options may vary, you can expect similar enriching activities to those outlined below, ensuring you make the most of your mountain escape.

Lunch at Kasbah Bab Ourika

Meals in the Atlas Mountains are typically a highlight of your stay, often organized by your hotel. If you choose Kasbah Bab Ourika, prepare for a culinary treat! The food is nothing short of incredible, featuring a fantastic selection of Moroccan dishes for both lunch and dinner. Mornings begin with a gorgeous Moroccan breakfast, complete with some Western options. Dining here is an integral part of the experience, offering fresh, flavorful cuisine in a stunning setting.

Camel Riding in the Atlas Foothills

A camel ride is a quintessential Moroccan experience you’ll want to include in your 10-day itinerary! At Kasbah Bab Ourika, we pre-booked our activities, and the camel ride was a fantastic way to explore the Atlas Mountains. Gliding through the stunning scenery and local villages on camelback offers a unique perspective of this beautiful region.

During our visit, we were fortunate enough to coincide with a school holiday, which meant we met many enthusiastic children in the villages. They eagerly practiced their French, greeting us with cheerful “Bonjour!” as we passed. This interaction added an unexpected layer of warmth and charm to our ride.

Traditional Hammam at the Spa

A trip to Morocco simply isn’t complete without indulging in a traditional hammam experience! Kasbah Bab Ourika features a beautiful on-site spa, where I decided to book my hammam. It was a truly rejuvenating and memorable experience, leaving my skin incredibly smooth and refreshed. If you’re looking to embrace this ancient Moroccan ritual, the kasbah’s spa offers a perfect opportunity for an authentic and luxurious treatment.

Henna Hand Art

In the afternoon, after your village exploration, camel ride, and a relaxing spa session, why not embrace another unique Moroccan tradition: henna art? Henna, a natural plant-based dye, is meticulously applied to hands (or feet) in intricate designs. At Kasbah Bab Ourika, a local Berber woman, skilled in this art form, comes to the hotel to create beautiful designs for guests. I chose to adorn both hands, and the result was absolutely stunning!

In Morocco, henna art is typically reserved for special occasions like weddings, so don’t be surprised if locals ask about your recent celebrations! The longevity of your henna depends on how often you wash your hands or swim, but it generally lasts for several days. I was particularly delighted that my henna faded gradually, well after our return home, allowing me to cherish this beautiful memento of our journey even longer. It added such a unique and joyful touch to our entire trip.

Dinner at Kasbah Bab Ourika

After a day filled with exploration and cultural experiences in the Atlas Mountains, return to the comfort of Kasbah Bab Ourika for a delightful dinner. Savor the exquisite Moroccan cuisine prepared by the kasbah’s talented chefs, reflecting the fresh, local flavors of the region. It’s the perfect way to conclude an adventurous day, surrounded by the serene beauty of the mountains.

Day 4: Immersing in Atlas Mountain Life

Dedicate your fourth day to a deeper immersion into the captivating life of the Atlas Mountains, focusing on local culture and traditional crafts.

Trek Through a Local Berber Village

On Day 4, spend more time experiencing a local Berber village. If you’re staying at Kasbah Bab Ourika, there are several charming local towns nearby to explore. We opted for a guided trek with a local guide, Zakaria (you can contact him directly on Instagram if not staying at the kasbah, or simply request him when booking your trek with the hotel). Zakaria was an exceptional guide, sharing fascinating stories and insights into growing up in a Berber village. He’s a true local hero, warmly greeted by children throughout the village who know him for regularly bringing them books and toys. If you’re staying at Kasbah Bab Ourika, be sure to request him for your trek!

A thoughtful tip for your visit: if you plan to trek through Berber villages, consider bringing small gifts for the local children, such as stickers, books, or small toys. These little surprises are always met with immense joy and appreciation, creating heartwarming connections during your Morocco itinerary.

Berber Tea Making Class

In the afternoon, delve deeper into Berber culinary traditions by learning to make Berber tea. Moroccan mint tea, made with gunpowder green tea, fresh mint, and plenty of sugar, is a beloved beverage enjoyed throughout the day across Morocco. Berber tea shares a similar base but is distinguished by the inclusion of various other aromatic herbs alongside fresh mint.

At Kasbah Bab Ourika, a Berber tea making class begins with a stroll through the hotel’s organic herb garden to gather the necessary ingredients. You’ll then learn the intricate art of tea preparation with the chef, culminating in the delightful experience of savoring your freshly brewed tea anywhere you choose amidst the kasbah’s beautiful gardens.

We always enjoy taking cooking classes during our travels as it’s a fantastic way to learn new recipes and recreate the flavors of our trips back home. Day 5: Atlas Mountains to the Agafay Desert

Day 5 marks an exciting transition as you journey from the serene Atlas Mountains to the unique landscape of the Agafay Desert for an unforgettable overnight experience. This special desert stay was one of the most anticipated parts of our trip!

A camel ride just before sunset in the Agafay Desert is as enchanting as it sounds. While our visit in March brought surprisingly hot daytime temperatures, we wisely chose a sunset camel ride, making the experience far more comfortable and magical. The cooler evening air and the breathtaking desert hues as the sun dips below the horizon create an unforgettable moment. This timing is definitely a key consideration for your desert camel experience!

Stargazing with an Astronomer

One of the most captivating activities offered at Agafay Luxury Camp is stargazing with a professional astronomer. After dinner, we ventured out with the astronomer and a powerful telescope into the vast desert darkness. We were absolutely mesmerized by the crystal-clear view of the moon – it was a true highlight of our trip! We also managed to spot Jupiter, a truly awe-inspiring sight. What you’ll see will depend on the time of year and the clarity of the night sky, but if you’re blessed with a clear night, we wholeheartedly recommend booking this unique stargazing experience.

Romantic Dinner in a Private Tent

Elevate your desert experience with a romantic dinner in a private tent, an exclusive offering at many luxury desert camps in Agafay. At Agafay Luxury Desert Camp, this special dinner includes a delectable array of Moroccan salads to start, followed by your choice of tagine (we sampled both vegetarian and preserved lemon and chicken tagines). The meal concludes with a delightful dessert and traditional mint tea. The tent itself is beautifully adorned with flowers and candles, creating a truly intimate and memorable ambiance. It’s an enchanting way to enjoy the desert night, surrounded by romance and exquisite flavors.

Bid farewell to the serene desert as you make your way back to the bustling city of Marrakech on Day 6. Today, and over the next two days, you’ll dive deep into Marrakech’s historical treasures and iconic sights, experiencing the city’s unique blend of ancient charm and vibrant energy.

Madrasa Ben Youssef

After settling back into Marrakech, head to Madrasa Ben Youssef, a truly spectacular building in the heart of the old medina. Constructed in 1564 by Sultan Abdullah Al-Ghaleb, this madrasa served as a school, intellectual, spiritual, and cultural hub for over 400 years, dedicated to preserving the legacy of Arab-Muslim civilization. Its intricate carvings, stunning tilework, and peaceful courtyards offer a profound glimpse into Morocco’s rich artistic and scholarly heritage. Allow yourself to wander through its halls, imagining the centuries of learning that took place within its walls.

Lunch: Le Trou au Mur

Conveniently located just around the corner from Madrasa Ben Youssef, Le Trou au Mur is the perfect spot for lunch after your historical exploration. We absolutely adored our meal here; it was one of the most delicious and memorable dining experiences of our entire trip to Morocco.

We began with a delightful assortment of Moroccan salads, followed by succulent chicken and saffron kebabs infused with traditional Moroccan spices, and a fresh seasonal mezze plate. For dessert, we indulged in the unique and delicious ras el hanout ice cream and a refreshing orange blossom sorbet. Every dish was exquisite, making it a place we would eagerly revisit in a heartbeat.

La Maison de la Photographie (House of Photography)

This hidden gem quickly became one of our favorite stops during our entire Moroccan journey! La Maison de la Photographie is a small, enchanting museum housed in a beautiful riad, dedicated to showcasing Morocco’s rich history through stunning antique photographs. It’s an incredibly moving experience that truly deserves a place in your 10-day Morocco itinerary.

The museum features a permanent collection alongside regularly changing temporary exhibits, each offering a unique window into the past. Beyond exploring the captivating displays for a couple of hours, be sure to allocate time for the gift shop. Though small, it boasts an excellent collection of photographs for sale, including postcards of many featured images. As someone with a lifelong passion for photography, especially antique black and white prints, this was truly my idea of gift shop heaven! It’s also an ideal spot to pick up meaningful gifts for loved ones back home.

Jemaa el-Fnaa Square

As evening approaches, prepare to experience the enchanting spectacle of Jemaa el-Fnaa, Marrakech’s legendary main square and a UNESCO World Heritage site! This vibrant plaza truly comes alive as the sun sets, transforming into a mesmerizing open-air theatre. For the best vantage point, we highly recommend enjoying a drink or even dinner at one of the rooftop bars or restaurants surrounding the square. From this elevated perspective, you can safely and comfortably observe the kaleidoscope of activity below – storytellers, musicians, snake charmers, acrobats, and countless food stalls creating an unforgettable atmosphere. We particularly enjoyed the view from Zeitoun Café.

Dinner: Zeitoun Cafe

For dinner with a view, Zeitoun Cafe is an excellent choice, ideally situated in the heart of Jemaa el-Fnaa square. Its fabulous rooftop terrace provides the perfect vantage point to observe all the lively activity below while savoring delicious, traditional Moroccan food. We especially loved their homemade lemonade, or “citronnade,” a refreshing blend of freshly squeezed lemon juice, fresh mint, sugar, and mineral water. The local goat cheese pastilla, served with black olives, was another delightful starter that we highly recommend.

Another excellent option for dinner is Le Grand Cafe de la Poste. While it’s about a 30-minute walk from the city center, a short taxi ride makes it easily accessible. We unfortunately didn’t make it there on this trip, but it remains high on our list for our next visit to Marrakech due to its reputation for a sophisticated atmosphere and delicious cuisine.

Day 7: Marrakech Palaces and Gardens

Today is dedicated to exploring some of Marrakech’s most magnificent historical sites, offering a deep dive into the city’s imperial past and architectural splendor.

El Badi Palace

Start your day at El Badi Palace, a testament to the grandeur of the Saadian dynasty, built in the late sixteenth century by Sultan Ahmed al-Mansour. Though now largely in ruins, its scale and intricate design still convey the immense wealth and power it once represented. Wander through its vast courtyards, imagine the lavish celebrations held within its walls, and marvel at the remaining traces of Moroccan art and design. This palace remains a poignant symbol of Marrakech’s glorious past.

Bahia Palace

Next, visit the truly magnificent Bahia Palace, whose name literally means “brilliance” in Arabic, a fitting description for its stunning beauty. Dating back to the nineteenth century, this palace is a masterpiece of Moroccan design, adorned with brightly colored mosaics, intricate paintings, elaborate stucco work, and carved wooden ceilings. Beyond the breathtaking palace interiors, you can also explore its expansive 2-acre garden, offering a peaceful sanctuary. The Bahia Palace is particularly noteworthy for being one of the first buildings in North Africa to incorporate stained glass as a decorative feature, adding to its unique charm and historical significance.

Saadian Tombs

Conclude your historical tour at The Saadian Tombs, another significant site dating back to the sixteenth century. Like El Badi Palace, these elaborate tombs were commissioned by Sultan Ahmed al-Mansour to honor his ancestors. Hidden for centuries until their rediscovery in 1917, the tombs consist of two main, intricately decorated sections, including the Hall of Twelve Pillars, a breathtaking chamber filled with marble and cedarwood ornamentation. This site offers a fascinating glimpse into the funerary art and reverence of Morocco’s past rulers.

Dinner at Le Royal Mansour

Tonight, prepare for an exceptionally special dining experience at Le Royal Mansour. This is truly an evening you won’t forget!

If your visit coincides with Ramadan, as ours did, you might have the unique opportunity to experience their Iftar dinner. Iftar, or Ftour, is the special meal consumed by Muslims to break their fast after sunset during Ramadan. Be warned: it is an incredibly generous feast! We recommend not eating anything after breakfast on this day to fully appreciate the abundance. You’ll be served a continuous flow of Moroccan soups, hard-boiled eggs, a vast array of vegetables, succulent meats, diverse starters, main dishes, and exquisite Moroccan pastries from start to finish. It’s a truly authentic and grand culinary journey.

Even if you’re visiting outside of Ramadan, you can still book dinner at Le Grand Table Marocaine at Le Royal Mansour for a fabulous meal any time of the year. For the ultimate indulgence, consider extending your stay to include a night in one of Le Royal Mansour’s luxurious private riads, complete with a dedicated butler for an unparalleled level of service and comfort.

Day 8: Marrakech Gardens and Relaxation

Begin your day with a visit to the exquisite Majorelle Gardens. This highly popular site requires tickets to be booked online and in advance, as they often sell out. You’ll need to decide whether you wish to visit only the garden, the garden plus the Berber Museum, the garden plus the Yves Saint Laurent Museum, or all three. Note that the Yves Saint Laurent Museum is located outside the garden and down the street, so if you plan to visit the garden’s cafe, do so before exiting, as re-entry is not permitted.

The cafe within the Majorelle Gardens offers a delightful setting for breakfast or lunch. Its menu features a lovely selection of Moroccan breakfast and lunch items, alongside a variety of beverages including mint tea, coffee, and freshly squeezed orange juice. We enjoyed Moroccan crepes, orange juice, and mint tea, taking in the picturesque views while writing out postcards. It’s a perfect spot to relax and refuel amidst the garden’s beauty.

Lunch at La Maison Arabe “Country Club”

If you’re staying at La Maison Arabe, take advantage of their exclusive “Country Club” – a private garden, pool, and riad area located off-site. It’s a wonderful place to escape the city heat, enjoy a leisurely lunch, and spend a few hours relaxing by the pool. After your visit to the Majorelle Gardens, simply return to La Maison Arabe and take their convenient shuttle bus to the Country Club for a refreshing afternoon. This tranquil oasis provides a perfect balance to your busy itinerary.

As evening descends, we love the tradition of enjoying a pre-dinner drink in a beautiful hotel, and La Maison Arabe offers the perfect setting. For a memorable meal, we suggest trying the Cornish game hen tagine, the flavorful vegetarian couscous, and the innovative amlou tiramisu for dessert. For your stay in Essaouira, we absolutely adored Riad Chbanate. The entire staff was incredibly warm and friendly, going above and beyond to make our stay as special as possible. I was particularly enamored with the handmade glass and silver toiletry bottles in our bathroom. When I inquired where I could purchase them, the staff generously offered to buy them for me at the local “Moroccan price” (a significant difference from the “tourist price”!). Their kindness was truly touching, and I cherish these unique souvenirs decorated with hammered silver.

Our room at Riad Chbanate was incredibly spacious and comfortable, featuring a gorgeous bathroom with a huge, beautiful stone tub. Upon arrival, our room was charmingly decorated with red rose petals, adding a romantic touch to our stay. This riad’s location inside the medina of Essaouira is absolutely perfect for exploring the city on foot.

Villa Maroc is another enchanting option for your stay in Essaouira. It’s perfectly positioned on the edge of the medina, offering stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean and the historic Portuguese harbor. The interior design of this villa is absolutely spectacular, and its restaurant proved to be one of our favorite dining spots during our entire Morocco trip. For those seeking a blend of history and comfort, L’Heure Bleue, a historic Relais & Châteaux property with a distinctive colonial feel, is also an excellent choice. It boasts a superb location, a private pool, and a delicious restaurant. We thoroughly enjoyed both a drink at their bar and a memorable meal in their restaurant.

Upon your arrival in Essaouira, the best way to get acquainted with this charming coastal town is to simply go for a walk. Essaouira is relatively small and wonderfully walkable, allowing you to easily navigate its winding streets and bustling souks. Take your time to absorb the relaxed atmosphere, admire the distinctive blue and white architecture, and get a feel for the rhythm of local life. It’s a perfect gentle introduction to this captivating city on your first day.

Lunch at Adwak

For lunch, we highly recommend Adwak, a restaurant that came highly recommended by our hotel and certainly did not disappoint. Being on the Atlantic coast, Essaouira’s menus feature a more prominent selection of fresh fish and seafood compared to Marrakech or the desert regions.

While we enjoyed tagines throughout Morocco, the caramelized fish tagines in Essaouira were a unique and absolutely delicious discovery. They offered a distinct flavor profile that we loved! We also consistently appreciated the generous and flavorful vegetable accompaniments served with all tagines and couscous dishes across the country, making every meal a wholesome and satisfying experience.

If you’re looking for a truly special souvenir to bring home, consider acquiring a painting from a local artist during your time in Essaouira. The city is renowned for its artistic community, particularly along the historic ramparts. We found a beautiful painting from a well-known local artist (rumor has it, she and her husband, both painters, were even featured on a Netflix show!), which has become one of my most treasured mementos from our Moroccan travels. You can discover their captivating works, and those of many other talented artists, at the top of the city’s remparts, offering a unique opportunity to take home a piece of Essaouira’s vibrant art scene.

As the day draws to a close, make your way to the historic Skala de la Kasbah. This stunning sea bastion is undoubtedly one of our favorite spots in Essaouira, especially at sunset. The fortified walls, ancient cannons, and the crashing waves of the Atlantic Ocean create a dramatic backdrop. It’s a truly picturesque setting that offers breathtaking views as the sun dips below the horizon, painting the sky in fiery hues.

We embarked on three different camel rides during our time in Morocco, and each offered a unique charm. The bond between the guides and their camels was evident, with one guide sharing that he’d had his camels for over a decade, fostering a deep connection. The camels themselves were always relaxed, calm, and friendly, making for pleasant interactions.

However, our camel ride in Essaouira was by far our favorite! This two-hour tour led us along the expansive beach, over gentle dunes, and through peaceful forests. Our guide was not only friendly but also incredibly knowledgeable, sharing fascinating insights about camels and the history of Essaouira throughout the journey. It was a truly enjoyable and unforgettable experience, easily ranking among our top memories in Morocco!

Salut Maroc also serves alcohol, making it an excellent spot to enjoy a cocktail from their extensive menu, alongside freshly pressed juices and mint tea. We particularly enjoyed starting with the local goat cheese croquettes of Khobiza spinach and pistachio with z’aatar amlou sauce, followed by the wild seabream tagine with organic seasonal vegetables. Every dish was a testament to the fresh, local flavors of Essaouira.

Last-Minute Shopping in Essaouira’s Souks

After a satisfying lunch, dedicate your afternoon to leisurely wandering through Essaouira’s souks, seeking out treasures to bring home. The shopping experience in Essaouira is notably calmer and less intense than in Marrakech, making it a truly enjoyable pursuit. During our exploration, we acquired beautiful silver and coral Berber earrings, aromatic spices and teas, authentic Argan oil, charming silver and glass toiletry bottles, local ceramics, and a captivating painting. When to Visit Morocco for Your 10-Day Trip

Choosing the best time to visit Morocco for this diverse 10-day itinerary is crucial for an enjoyable experience. Generally, early Spring (March & April) and Autumn (September – November) are considered the ideal seasons. During these months, you’ll avoid the extreme heat of summer and the occasional chill of winter, making outdoor activities and city explorations much more comfortable.

We visited in mid-March and largely experienced wonderful weather, with the exception of two unusually hot days that reached 95°F (35°C). Even then, the evenings were pleasant. Winter (December – February) can also be a fascinating time to visit. Many riads, including those we mentioned, feature cozy fireplaces in common areas and even in individual rooms, perfect for cooler evenings. Morocco even boasts a ski resort in the Atlas Mountains, Oukaïmeden, which could be an unexpected addition to a winter trip!

During our stay in the Atlas Mountains, we were particularly grateful for the cool nights, which allowed us to fully enjoy the warmth and ambiance of the fireplace in our room. This itinerary can be adapted to any season, but for the most balanced weather, Spring and Autumn offer the best conditions for exploring all that Morocco has to offer.
